American researchers have developed solar cells that are transparent enough to be used to tint windows on cars or buildings. Conventional cells are rigid or bulky, but the Americans created by a new method, thins and flexible solar cells that can be printed with ease on a soft surface.

“You can make (the solar cells) in the form of a gray film that could be added to architectural glass,” said lead researcher John Rogers of the University of Illinois.

The new technology can be used on cars windows and can generate enough energy to put into operation a GPS system or an air conditioning device.

Many international companies are making thin-film solar cells, but they are usually less efficient in converting energy into electricity than conventional cells.

Solar cells are at large search because of inflated oil prices and increasing concern towards the environment.
