The Open Energy company will launch until 2010 the world’s first tractor powered by solar energy. The selling price of the green tractor is estimated at 50,000 euros.

The “eco” tractor will have a solar panel of 26 square meters, which will adjust itself to capture solar energy. According to the engineer Peter Prohaska, the flexible panels are 40% more effective than fixed panels.

” With stored energy, the tractor operate non-stop for a day and a half, if it is used to low capacity like watering and weeding,” said Peter Prohaska.

The optimal speed of this “green” tractor will be 0.5 kilometers per hour but can reach 6 km per hour for a shorter period of time.

Those from Open Energy said that the tractor can be used to ploughing, on a shorter period of time. The tractor can also be equipped with a GPS system.

The first tractor will be used starting with 2009 in Austria and sales will start in 2010. Companies from Asia and the U.S. have already shown interest in purchasing the product.
