In our days every gadget is powered by batteries which are cheap but not very efficient to power electronics. It seems that this problem will be solved because a team of researchers at the Institute of Electronics, Mircorelectronics and Nanotechnology, have discovered micro fuel cells that maintain a good power density at room temperature and boasts improved fuel efficiency. The energy density of this fuel cells is 385 Wh/L, in comparison with lithium ion batteries which have a energy density of 270 Wh/L.
How electricity is produced? These fuel cells uses methanol as fuel and also as the anode, air around the cell serves as a cathode. The electricity is produced only when the air mixture and methanol reacts in the presence of an electrolyte. The efficiency is increased by 75% when is added a macroporous layer into a silicon-based fuel cell.
These fuel cells are so efficient because require a small amount of fuel, which eliminates the need of any energy using pumps. The researchers believe that these micro fuel cells will be the future of any gadget. More, the fuel cells could be used to power the cars in the next 20 years and the mobile devices in the next years.
